The pont Noir underwent repairs in 2011 and 2012 as part of the Rapibus corridor project. The original infrastructure designed for trains was converted to accommodate buses. Today, close to 300 buses cross the bridge during peak periods from Mondays to Fridays.
The bridge held up to the major spring freshets in 2017 and 2019, enabling us to maintain our public transit service. First responders even used it to cross the Gatineau river.
Pont Noir pier repairs
The stone piers that make the bridge look as it originally did were the subject of some spectacular work. We wanted to both consolidate their foundations and preserve their heritage aspect. It is important to ensure the longevity of our infrastructures. This structure is essential to the Rapibus corridor.
Consolidating the piers’ foundations under the water
The contractor installed sheet pilings all around the piers. The water was then completely drained to create work areas in the middle of the river. The workers then reinforced the piers’ foundations with concrete, installed new steel tips and restored the piers to their original look.
